Choosing forklifts for narrow aisles and high racks: what to measure

1. Measure working clearance, not just rack spacing

Record the narrowest actual clearance, allowing for overhanging goods, columns, barriers and intersections. Add pallet dimensions, fork-entry direction and turning layouts at aisle ends.

Ask the supplier to check the model's aisle requirement for the intended pallet. There is no single standard aisle width for all trucks and loads. Keep pedestrian space and the site's traffic plan separate.

2. Provide rack heights and doorway limits

Provide the highest pallet position, ceiling height, overhead obstructions and lowest doorway along the route. A truck serving several areas needs the entire route checked, not just the rack aisle.

Confirm lifting capability at the actual working position. A mast reaching the shelf does not guarantee that it can carry the load there; check the configuration and load chart.

3. When should you consider reach trucks or stackers?

A truck category alone does not guarantee compatibility with your pallets, racks, floor or workload. Send pallet-base photos and picking/placement locations so the supplier can assess forks and support legs where fitted.

4. What the site-survey brief should include

• A layout with actual dimensions and column positions.
• Photos of pallets, the heaviest loads and rack levels.
• Photos of doors, corners, floor joints and ramps where present.
• A list of indoor/outdoor areas and special conditions.
• Shifts, peak workload and charging locations.

Ask technical staff to confirm the configuration before finalising rental or changing rack layouts. Trials require qualified personnel and the site's procedures; do not improvise load tests.
