Choosing the right forklift: 7 details to prepare before renting

1. Document the goods and handling locations

Record the heaviest load including pallet and packaging, not the average weight. Add length, width, height, fork-entry direction and photos. Ask for a separate technical assessment for off-centre loads, paper rolls or long goods.

Measure the highest placement level and overhead clearance. Check the exact truck's load chart for the intended load centre, lift height and attachment; the model's nominal capacity alone is insufficient. See the manufacturer's guidance on load capacity.

2. Survey the route before choosing a truck type

Measure the narrowest points along the entire route: doors, corners, rack aisles and turning areas. Send a dimensioned layout, not just the building width. For container entry, confirm lowered mast height, free lift and ramp conditions.

Describe indoor floors, outdoor yards, slopes, dust and water exposure. Tyres, protective configurations and operating limits must follow the exact model's documentation; do not assume a diesel truck can go anywhere.

3. Match the energy system to the work schedule

List shifts, actual running hours, breaks and available charging locations. Electric trucks may suit enclosed warehouses, but battery, charger and electricity supply all need checking. Diesel trucks need refuelling plans and a suitable work-environment assessment.

Do not assume two shifts require exactly two batteries, or one charge lasts all day. Ask the supplier to calculate against actual use and confirm with documentation or a site survey.

4. Send one consistent rental requirements sheet

• Goods: maximum weight, dimensions, pallets and photos.
• Warehouse: stacking height, lowest doorway, narrowest aisle, floor and slopes.
• Operations: shifts, fleet size, expected running hours and electricity supply.
• Service: delivery location, required date, rental term and maintenance needs.
