Renting a 2.5, 3 or 5-tonne forklift: how to choose capacity

1. Nominal capacity does not apply in every situation

A truck's capacity plate links lifting capability to conditions such as load centre and height. A changed load centre, uneven load or attachment may reduce permitted capacity. Do not derive a safe limit from a simple formula.

Ask the supplier to check the load chart for the actual truck, mast and intended accessories. See the manufacturer's guidance on reading capacity plates.

2. Prepare data to choose between 2.5, 3 and 5 tonnes

Measure or verify the maximum total weight of goods, pallet and packaging. Add length along the forks, width, height and the centre of gravity if known. Standard pallets and long machinery or unevenly weighted loads need different assessments.

Two loads weighing 2 tonnes may not suit the same configuration if one is compact and the other long. This illustrates the need for more data; it does not establish that a particular 2.5 or 3-tonne truck is suitable.

3. Confirm lift height and attachments together

Ask whether the quoted configuration can handle the load at the highest rack level or only near the ground. Specify fork positioners, roll clamps, long forks and other attachments at the outset for technical assessment.

Do not add attachments after delivery and assume lifting capacity is unchanged. For unusual goods, obtain a configuration proposal and technical confirmation before agreeing on delivery.

4. Checklist for comparing quotations by capacity

• Do all quotations use the same load weight and dimensions?
• Is the required lift height stated as an actual measurement?
• Are the attachments and fork length suitable for the task?
• Has a load chart or configuration confirmation been supplied?
• Does the proposed truck suit the aisles and site?

Extra nominal capacity does not automatically solve aisle, floor or load-dimension constraints. Choose equipment capable of the confirmed task, rather than simply the largest truck within budget.
